The recent Channel 2 (WJBK-TV) video of the Chrysler workers caught taking a drug and alcohol break is, in my humble opinion, just a single image of something that has plagued the auto industry for many decades. With the story being picked up by USA Today, The Drudge Report, Fox News, MSNBC, The Huffington Post, ABC News, CBS News, NBC News and The Wall Street Journal the media firestorm has just begun. And we, Detroit, have managed once again to supply the nation with another view of our “dark side”. Just frickin great! And in light of all the additional press it will be interesting to see exactly how Chrysler / Fiat deals with it on Monday and more interesting to me will be how the UAW reacts and actually acts upon their own policies.
And as many of you may or may not know, I am not a fan of the UAW (or unions in general for that matter) and strongly believe they are the primary contributor to the downfall in the US auto industry. But this media event is just a late coming view of what is common throughout the industry. The Detroit auto makers have been financially crushed and are struggling to come back and these asshats are sucking up good job slots and just don’t seem to get it. And because they are members of the “UAW” they have a severe invincibility complex. They always have!
With the job pool, er … unemployment, being what it is, why do these goombahs even need job consideration after being fingered for what under normal conditions would be arresting offenses for public intoxication, drug possession and possession of alcohol in a public park. You and I would be in the pokey right now trying to bond out. But they are “being suspended and investigated”. WTF??!!
All in all, I am enjoying the hell out of this chain of events and look forward to the coming days of press and rhetoric swirling around this video.
Just one guys opinion!
